Job Title: Principal Mechanical Engineer – Nuclear (Engineering & Design)

Overview:
I’m recruiting on behalf of a leading consultancy supporting major projects in the nuclear sector across the North West. With a growing client base and a healthy project pipeline, they are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to take a lead role in the design and delivery of engineering solutions across highly regulated environments.
Based primarily out of the Manchester office (with regular visits to client sites across Lancashire, Merseyside, and Cheshire), this role offers a hybrid working model and the chance to work on technically complex and nationally significant projects aligned with the UK’s clean energy strategy.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead and deliver mechanical engineering design packages for nuclear projects, ensuring compliance with client specifications, project requirements, and safety standards.

Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to deliver fit-for-purpose, cost-effective design solutions.

Review and approve design deliverables including mechanical flow diagrams, layout drawings, equipment specifications, and justification reports.

Support development and mentoring of junior engineers and ensure quality assurance across all documentation and outputs.

Act as Lead Mechanical Engineer on assigned projects or workstreams, maintaining oversight of design, schedule, and delivery.

Ensure compliance with company, client, and regulatory nuclear safety policies and CDM requirements.

Engage with associated stakeholders and ensure effective coordination with other disciplines.
Required Qualifications & Experience:

HND, HNC, or Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline).

Recognised as SQEP (Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person) within mechanical design.

Significant experience in nuclear engineering or other regulated sectors with transferable skills.

Proven ability to lead engineering design packages and contribute across the full project lifecycle.

Comfortable working in multi-disciplinary teams and interfacing with clients and supply chain partners.
Desirable Experience:

Chartered Mechanical Engineer or working towards Chartership.

Experience in one or more of the following areas:

Nuclear ventilation
-
Mechanical handling systems
-
Process equipment (machinery or vessels)

Familiarity with the following design and engineering outputs:

Design Justification Reports (DJR)

Mechanical Handling Diagrams and Flow Diagrams

Equipment specs and datasheets
-
Design Proposal Drawings and Layouts

Multi-discipline and single-discipline design reviews

Technology Readiness Level (TRL) assessments
