Environmental Lead

Purpose of the Role

The Environmental Lead will act as the primary environmental representative on the project, working closely with the project team, stakeholders, and supply chain to ensure environmental compliance and best practice.

Key objectives of the role include:

  • Acting as the environmental lead on the project and providing day-to-day environmental support to site teams.
  • Managing environmental aspects to ensure compliance with legal, client, and ISO standards.
  • Meeting client, stakeholder, legislative, third-party, and internal environmental requirements.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of the company’s sustainability strategy.

 

Role Accountabilities

  • Undertake environmental aspect and impact assessments and develop mitigation measures.
  • Prepare and implement Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMP) and project-specific environmental management plans (e.g. pollution prevention, waste management).
  • Ensure environmental plans are communicated to site teams and supply chain, delivering training, toolbox talks, and daily briefings as required.
  • Apply for environmental consents and permits and maintain an up-to-date consents register.
  • Review method statements and risk assessments to ensure environmental protection measures are included and implemented.
  • Implement environmental monitoring for air, water, noise, and vibration where required.
  • Carry out regular site inspections and use HART to report issues, track actions, and conduct trend analysis.
  • Investigate environmental incidents, identify root causes, prepare reports, and liaise with regulators where required.
  • Support internal and external audits alongside the Head Office HSE team.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 14001, BS 50001, and company environmental standards.
  • Support the Project Manager in maintaining strong relationships with clients, local authorities, and stakeholders.
  • Develop communication materials such as guidance documents, newsletters, and alerts.
  • Liaise with Head Office environmental teams, site teams, and supply chain to ensure environmental objectives are met.
  • Prepare and present environmental performance reports.
  • Capture and share best practice and develop case studies.
  • Support work winning activities, including PQQs and tenders.

 

Key Safety Responsibilities

  • Comply with all Health, Safety and Environmental (HS&E) responsibilities as outlined in the company’s HS&E policy and individual responsibilities document.

 

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar environmental role within the construction industry (ideally infrastructure projects).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Degree-level qualification in an environmental or related discipline (preferred).
  • Practitioner membership of ISEP (or equivalent professional body) preferred.
