The Opportunity
We're recruiting an Environmental Safety Case Engineer to deliver safety case documentation on a nuclear project. You'll be working remotely on a part-time basis (two days per week) for a leading engineering consultancy, with occasional travel to the North West.
This is hands-on technical work. You'll prepare and develop safety and environmental documentation that justifies the tolerability of hazards in complex nuclear environments. Your expertise in safety case development directly impacts project delivery and regulatory compliance.

What You'll Be Doing
Safety Case Development
- Prepare and develop environmental and safety case documentation
- Justify hazard tolerability in high-risk nuclear environments
- Develop technical arguments and supporting analysis
- Ensure documentation meets regulatory and client requirements
Regulatory & Compliance
- Maintain compliance with UK nuclear regulatory requirements
- Support engagement with regulatory bodies where required
- Ensure documentation aligns with industry standards and best practice
- Contribute to safety case reviews and updates
Project Coordination
- Work with project teams to integrate safety case requirements
- Liaise with multi-disciplinary engineering teams
- Support client discussions on safety and environmental matters
- Report on documentation progress and resource usage
About You
Essential Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years' nuclear industry experience
- MUST HAVE: Proven experience preparing environmental and safety case documentation in nuclear environments
- Expert-level knowledge of:
- Safety case development and justification
- UK nuclear regulatory environment and requirements
- Environmental assessment and documentation
- Hazard identification and tolerability arguments
- Technical writing and documentation standards
- First degree in relevant engineering or science discipline (or equivalent professional experience)
Essential Personal Qualities
- Proactive and self-motivated
- Strong technical writing ability
- Excellent attention to detail in safety-critical work
- Able to work independently and manage own workload
- Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences
- Comfortable with remote working and occasional travel to North West sites
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng or IEng)
- Experience with specific nuclear facility types (reactors, fuel storage, waste management)
- Familiarity with ONR guidance and regulatory assessment processes
