Project Engineering Manager – HV Transmission
Contract - Outside of scope of IR35

Location: Manchester
Hybrid: 2 -3  days per week in office
Duration: 12 months

We’re supporting the mobilisation of a major HV transmission programme and are seeking a Project Engineering Manager with recent experience on National Grid substation projects to lead the coordination and delivery of multidisciplinary design through all stages of project development.

This is a pivotal role for a technically experienced and commercially aware professional, capable of overseeing large-scale design packages, managing stakeholders, and driving engineering excellence on complex infrastructure works.

The Role

  • Manage the delivery of multi-disciplinary design across National Grid transmission projects, from bid and FEED through construction

  • Lead internal design teams and third-party consultants to ensure design intent meets technical, safety, commercial, and environmental expectations

  • Oversee subcontractor design packages and manage technical approvals

  • Support and advise on buildability, safety by design, and maintainability

  • Liaise with planning authorities and statutory bodies (e.g. DNOs, utility providers) as required

  • Drive the development and tracking of the design deliverables programme, including gate reviews, change control, and value engineering

  • Lead BIM coordination and data sharing practices in line with client protocols

  • Promote Lean construction principles and ensure lessons learned are captured and shared across the business

  • Monitor and optimise design budgets and resource allocation

  • Serve as the primary liaison between engineering, commercial, and delivery teams—ensuring alignment and clarity at every stage

What You’ll Bring

  • Recent, hands-on experience managing design delivery on National Grid substation or HV transmission projects

  • In-depth understanding of UK transmission regulations, engineering governance, and National Grid standards

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex technical design scopes and third-party teams across multiple disciplines

  • Strong commercial awareness and experience with design budgeting, risk/value management, and programme tracking

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills

  • Working knowledge of BIM standards and digital collaboration tools

  • A strong safety focus with a track record of promoting Safety by Design principles

  • Degree in Electrical, Civil, or relevant engineering discipline; Chartered Engineer status preferred

This is an opportunity to take a lead role in delivering nationally significant energy infrastructure. If you’re a confident and delivery-driven Engineering Manager with deep sector knowledge, we’d like to hear from you.
