A major blue chip company is looking to appoint an additional Analytical Chemist on a 1 year contract initially to assist in the delicensing of a building which was previously used to manufacture radiopharmaceuticals.  The role is open to experienced candidates and Graduates as full training in the use of their specialist equipment is very much available.


The Analytical Chemist provides a compliance driven service supporting the sampling and measurement capability in support of waste-lead projects at the site, and especially the deregulation of part of the site. The key legislation is compliance with the Environmental Permitting Regulations EPR10. This is a predominantly laboratory based role and you will be analysing samples for the presence of Carbon 14, Tritium, Gamma radiation etc..

The Analytical Chemist operates measurement equipment, and the associated sample preparation equipment under the supervision of the Measurement Supervisor. They are expected to accurately and reliably follow Standard operating procedures operating radiation measurement equipment. Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice, and the ability to accurately follow procedures and is essential. The processes involve accurate weighing, drying, sub-sampling, counting samples and accurately reporting results.

The work requires good dexterity and good analytical skills. The ability to flag results when out of trend is essential. The work requires good mathematical skills and the ability to operate electronic sample management equipment.

  • Performing tasks in a timely and appropriate manner according to the SOPs and standard processes
  • Issuing of required items to the sampling teams (labels, containers, handheld devices etc.)
  • Tracking the remediation and DQO sampling to ensure progress is clear
  • Operation of liquid scintillation counters and gross alpha/beta multi sample counters following suitable training
  • Accurately recording results, and operation of the sample management process
  • The ability to take sub-samples of larger samples according to the defined process
  • Contribute to daily-dashboard meetings to ensure the right level of support is provided to the laboratory
  • Ensure the complete set of results are available at the right time to enable sentencing
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum qualified to HNC/HND or Degree level in a relevant scientific discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Basic knowledge of radiation protection regulations and standards would be highly desirable but not necessary as full training will be provided
  • Demonstrated ability to complete calculations essential to measurement, sampling and laboratory procedures
  • Good written and oral (English or local language) communication skills
  • Competency using Microsoft Office and other standard office PC applications
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Laboratory experience in an Analytical Chemistry or Radiochemistry laboratory
  • Good knowledge of radiation protection and waste regulations and standards
  • Experience with relevant radiological operations
  • Experience with procedural development and implementation
