In this interview, we will be meeting Peter Bates, the pizza and Galaxy chocolate loving Managing Director of Scantec.

What was your first job?
I was a Trainee Estimator working for an Engineering Company that was predominantly involved with the coal industry.

How did you come to work for Scantec?
26 years ago, I was working for a recruitment company and myself and one of my colleagues decided to form our own recruitment company to allow us to operate a business that could offer more opportunities than the company we were currently with. This was the birth of Scantec and we are both still involved with the business to this day.

What is the best thing about working for Scantec?
The culture. Seeing individuals working together but also seeing each person developing.

Whose poster was on your wall as a teenager?
Farah Fawcett. (One of the original Charlie’s Angels from the 1970’s)

What would your dream car be?
A Jaguar E-Type Mark 1 in Red.

What is your favourite meal?
Pizza.

Who would your perfect 3 dinner guests be?
Alex Ferguson, Winston Churchill and Bobby Moore.

What advice would you give anybody looking to break into recruitment?
Be prepared to work very hard but if you do, you will enjoy a fulfilling career.

If you could recruit anybody, who would it be?
Pep Guardiola. To remove any confusion, although Peter wants to invite Alex Ferguson over for dinner he is a big Manchester City fan, even from before they were actually any good (or so he claims).

If you were the Prime Minister, what is the first thing that you would change?
I would try to reach out to the electorate to gain the trust, interest and buy in for the whole political process.

What are your favourite sweets?
Galaxy Chocolate Bars (any donations gladly received)

What is the funniest thing you have seen in work?
Back in the days when the use of computer networks was quite new in the workplace, my colleague asked me where a specific file was, to which I replied “On my computer”. A little while later I caught this same person unplugging my computer tower making ready to carry it across the office to his desk and plug his keyboard into it so that he could access the said file!

If you are interested in a career in recruitment, then please take a look at the Work for Scantec page for further information.
